VON Canada’s eHomecare program is experiencing growth, and presently, they are searching for Personal Support Workers, also referred to as Health Care Technicians, for Part-Time roles. The available part-time positions encompass various FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) percentages, including 0.8 FTE (equivalent to 64 hours bi-weekly), 0.6 FTE (48 hours bi-weekly), 0.5 FTE (40 hours bi-weekly) and Casual positions.

Job Summary:
Our Healthcare Technicians, specializing in Palliative and/or Acute Medically Complex care, have the opportunity to utilize their skills daily with clients requiring either palliative or acute medically complex care. Working under the direction of a registered nurse Director (DRN), the Care Technician will deliver hands-on care to clients within their homes in collaboration with our nursing and/or Home Care programs.
Utilizing a virtual electronic monitoring system, the Care Technician will maintain direct communication with the DRN, providing real-time information.
This position is eligible for the Ontario Government’s $3.00 per hour wage enhancement for all hours spent directly caring for clients. Comprehensive training will be provided to support advanced skill sets and requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Observing and documenting clinical data in the patient’s electronic medical record under the direction of the DRN, following VON guidelines.
- Providing personal care to support activities of daily living and medication administration under the direction of the DRN.
- Maintaining direct contact with the DRN through a virtual real-time electronic monitoring system.
- Contributing to developing and modifying a patient’s care plan in collaboration with the DRN based on observed patient outcomes.
- Identify if additional resources (e.g., home support) are needed in the home under the direction of the DRN and coordinate these needs with the eShift office for scheduling.
- Communicating and collaborating with the patient’s family/caregiver to ensure a positive patient experience under the direction of the DRN.
External and Internal Relationships:
- Regular communication and interaction with Registered Nurses.
- Engagement with clients and their family members.
- Direct communication with eShift administrative support staff.
Education, Designations and Experience:
- Certification as a Personal Support Worker (PSW).
- Consideration will be given to candidates with a Developmental Support Worker (DSW) certification.
- Preferably, one (1) to two (2) years of experience as a PSW in Palliative/Pediatric or acute care (hospital).
- Current CPR and First Aid certification.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the fundamentals of Palliative Care – Level I (completion of a course or a commitment to take the next available course within the first year of employment).
- Completion of the AHPCE course is an advantage.
Skill Requirements:
- Ability to learn and demonstrate competency for additional hands-on clinical skills required to support a patient’s activities of daily living (e.g., subcutaneous medications, G-Tube feeds and flushes, bladder irrigation).
- Adaptability to working in various social and economic environments.
- Familiarity with community resources.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Basic observation and problem-solving skills.
- Aptitude for ongoing skills training and the ability to implement learned skills and behaviours.
