Security Services Worker, VP Services Canada
Reporting to the Supervisor of Security Patrol, the Security Services Worker will ensure the safety and security of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. The incumbent will help maintain a secure learning and living environment at the University of Calgary.
Key responsibilities include patrolling university grounds and buildings to prevent and detect offences against individuals and property, fostering partnerships within the campus community, and responding to emergencies and routine situations.
Summary of Key Responsibilities
- Serve as a contact point on behalf of the University Campus community.
- Conducted vehicle, foot, and bike patrols of university buildings and grounds.
- Monitor CCTV cameras and manage the dispatch operations centre effectively.
- Track and report various metrics, including life safety, Simplex fire panel, Genetec, Dispatch log, Resolver, Alertus and the U of C Safety app.
- Provide immediate response to all emergency calls on campus.
- Respond to and assist with calls for general service and aid to staff, faculty, students and visitors.
- Identify and address potential threats on campus, including infrastructure emergencies like floods or fires.
- Engage and collaborate with external emergency response agencies, such as Police, Fire and EMS.
- Document daily activities, property damage or theft, criminal offences or other irregularities.
- Act as a mentor for new employees and/or participate in specific training programs.
- Opportunity to join the Mountain Bike Security Unit.
- Participate in security initiatives and programs, such as Safe Walk, security alerts and Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED).
- Provide specialized support and awareness training to other university departments upon request.
Qualifications / Requirements
- High school diploma.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient in written and spoken English.
- Valid Class 5 Alberta Operator’s Licence.
- Ability to provide a clean criminal background check, including a vulnerable sector clearance letter.
- Physically and mentally capable of performing the duties of the position.
- Intermediate knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Strong customer service skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Demonstrates strong ethical standards, reflecting trustworthiness, integrity and good judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in security or law enforcement.
- Post-secondary education in a related field.
- Current Level C CPR (including AED) and Standard First Aid Certificates. (Employer willing to train qualified candidates within the first 30 days of hire).
- Security Services and Investigators Act (SSIA) license. (Employer willing to train qualified candidates within the first 30 days of hire).
